Each detail of this piece was carefully hand selected. Beginning with her hair; the color lavender signifies femininity, grace, elegance and beauty, while light blue is associated with passion and also spirituality: the sacred, higher self, third eye, etc. These colors stood out to me as symbolizing key factors in the spiritual and physical attributes of motherhood. The flowers hold an equally meaningful purpose—the plants themselves represent the roots to bringing life and that connection mothers share with Mother Earth. The lilies signify divinity, purity and the ancient Romans believed the lily was the finest creation of the goddess of family. Sunflowers have a unique ability to provide energy in the form of nourishment and vibrance, much like the sun. Lastly, the pink carnations represent the symbol of a mother’s undying love. Why a gold mandala? Mandalas represent wholeness, a cosmic diagram reminding us of our relation to infinity, and they also symbolize our journeys through life. They can tell a story of where an individual has been, and sometimes reveal the individual’s path in life (in this case, the path of a mother.)
All in all, this piece took over 25 hours of conscious and diligent work, many of which were dedicated to the background, which I knew was an absolute crucial element from the moment this piece sprang to life in my mind. Whether the journey of pregnancy is one that you have yet to explore or have climbed many times before, I hope that as you bring this piece into your home, it will be a celebration in honor of the incredible life-giving, life-changing path of motherhood—as it has been for me.
